Heirlooms often represent a beloved person or memory that tells us a little bit more about who we are. They don’t have to be on trend or in good condition to add warmth and personality to our homes. Not every heirloom has a fantastic history, but they all create a sense of family and belonging that serves as a reminder of the journeys that have brought us together. Here are 10 family heirlooms from the archives that celebrate history and family.

When Samantha and Jonah Arcade and their two daughters outgrew their previous Brooklyn, NY apartment of six years, they never imagined they’d find room to breathe in a brownstone that was just 12 feet wide on each floor. But with Tirzah, 8, and Delaney, 4, a 1,000-square-foot home “wasn’t cutting it,” Sam admits. So about nine months ago, the family of four took a chance on a 1901 landmarked brownstone in need of a full renovation — from top to bottom, all four floors.

Maybe it’s the way they drape or the texture they add to a space, but hanging elements seem to be having a major moment in design right now. Whether it’s the revived 70s-chic look of macrame and woven wall hangings, dramatic hanging plants or artfully conceived backdrops (see below), hanging décor has made its way into almost every home tour we’ve run for the past year. For me, hanging décor provides multiple design solutions at once: it offers texture and color, it can add depth and sound proofing, and it can fill awkward spaces (especially in corners) by being suspended in the air. So today I’m taking a look at 20 incredible examples of hanging décor that have inspired me to rethink my “living with empty walls” mantra for this year. Hopefully these rooms can provide some clever DIY solutions for spring and summer decorating. xo, grace
Betsy and Peter Olmsted share their home with their two boys Emmett (7) and Wells (4), as well as Winnie the mature-madam shepherd mix, Hank the French bulldog, and Archer the leopard gecko. Their home was originally a Victorian carriage house and barn that was used for three neighboring mansions, built in 1890 when it also had three deeds. The 5,400-square-foot home was created from the converted spaces in 2008, and the Olmsted family moved in and made it their own a year ago. The downstairs features an open plan, their den, and the attached stables that became The Betsy Olmsted Design Studio — Betsy’s namesake textile company, Betsy Olmsted, which features a line of printed vibrant watercolor infused textile housewares with her whimsically sophisticated illustrations (which are heavily inspired by animals and nature). Upstairs you’ll find more open spaces, three bedrooms and baths, a study, and even a screened-in sleeping porch.
